The season of entertaining is right around the corner, but there is still plenty of time to jazz up your Dining Room to make it the talk of the season! There are many things you can incorporate into this space to make it unique, but the overall harmony between accents is what really makes a statement and makes it beautiful as a whole. I have come up with just a few ideas myself that will send you in the right direction for the design and decoration of your Dining Room!   Lighting is a crucial feature to a Dining Room because it is often a focal point piece that stands out to a guest. If it is too large, it can be overbearing, but if it too small, people will not be able to see their food! In this home, the Darien Country Estate in Darien, CT, you can see the chandelier is not over-the-top, but instead a stunning accent to the overall scheme of the room. It adds just the right amount of “bling” and elegance to this space. The sconces are a nice compliment of light as well to set the mood for a dinnertime meal. I hope this has motivated you to get into the entertaining spirit! There are so many things you can do to spice up your Dining Room for the upcoming parties and family gatherings, and these are just some of the ideas that can get you started. Your Not-So-Traditional Wood Flooring!

Posted by Catherine Cleare on Oct 21, 2014 in Color, design philosophy, floors, Foyers, kicthens, Kitchens, Lighting, trend setting design | Comments Off on Your Not-So-Traditional Wood Flooring!

Wood plank flooring is your traditional go-to flooring for a home because it is easy to maintain and clean while looking beautiful all at once. There are a plethora of woods and stains that can be used for flooring that can help complete the interior design and decoration of a space. Though wood plank floors are a league of their own, I have found some unique wood floors that will blow you away! Here is a parquet flooring that I incorporated into my design at the Carlyle in New York, New York. The main goal of the feature floor is to draw guests out of the entryway and down the hall towards the Living/seating area. It is almost as if it acts a runway to make your guests feel special as they walk into your home. It also reflects nicely with the cove lighting above! I hope these floors have opened your eyes to the possibilities in wood flooring! There are so many options out there, and it is just a matter of finding the one that is perfect for you and your space.   This is a theater I designed in Boca, Florida. If you’re looking for a theater with some character then choosing fun elements like I did in this theater to give it that classic 60’s vibe you’ll create a space that speaks for itself! This is a fun laid back theater with fun elements like the piping on the theater seats and the classic movie pictures on the walls that really help to tie the look together. There’s nothing like sitting back in one of these seats and watching a classic movie! As you can see, there are many different approaches when it comes to designing and decorating a Home Theater. Some home owners are very interested in having an over the top experience with all the bells and whistles, and some are just looking for a comfortable space to entertain their friends and family. I hope these different elements have helped you discover your dream entertainment space! For more interior design and decorating ideas, feel free to view my work here. Mixing Old & New Elements in an Interior Design!

A great way to create a unique space that is one of a kind is by simply mixing old and new elements together to create an overall harmony between different design periods. Mixing these types of elements can cater to a more subtle design scheme, or a bold punch; it all depends on the impact you are trying to make. Here are some unique examples of eclectic spaces and the incorporated elements that are old and new. This is such a classy and elegant space with a more transitional approach that is complimented by the large piece of modern abstract art. This is a great example of creating a more subtle eclectic design with more muted colors. I love the juxtaposition of the traditional wallpaper pattern with the freely painted abstract art. Miles Redd does wonders with his eclectic designs in bold colors and patterns. This is a fun space because it has very chromatic colors mixed with modern and traditional pieces. For example, the more traditional style sofa and club chairs are incorporated into a modern color scheme, with black lacquered doors, and a 1940’s French mosquito sculpture. It is just all around fun and exciting to see these elements grouped together! In the apartment of fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi, the elements of old and new are integrated in a subdued and soft way. A 19th century pedestal table welcomes guests, as antique armchairs and an abstract rug draw people in to sit. These timeless elements are placed within a sleek and modern architectural setting creating a cohesive and beautiful space. I find this game room so unique because each element is so different! This space consists of a French bar, Spanish carpet, 1968 card tables finished off with sleek industrial hanging lights. This really shows how the possibilities are endless as far as incorporating different elements from the around the world and different time periods! Old and new pieces can be introduced into your home in so many different ways- whether you want a subtle look, or want to make an exciting statement; it is all about how and what you want to incorporate into your space that will make it your own. The Importance of Seating in a Bedroom Design!

Posted by Catherine Cleare on Sep 12, 2014 in Bedrooms, chairs, design philosophy, furniture, General, Seating, trend setting design | Comments Off on The Importance of Seating in a Bedroom Design!

When designing a bedroom, one of the first essential items (besides the bed) is comfortable seating. Your bedroom is your escape; from life, kids, and problems. This is why it is important to have that space where you can relax and get away for a bit. Here are some fabulous ideas on ways to incorporate this necessary element into your bedroom design. If you are looking to have more than one comfortable seating option in your bedroom, then maybe you should consider incorporating a settee and/or club chairs into the overall design. I love how the settee is introduced in this space, by being placed up against the end of the bed. This not only saves the walking space, but provides a footboard for the bed as well! Benches are crucial for a bedroom because you always need a place to put on your shoes from before heading out the door. These two benches are in a great location right at the end of the bed. It not only gives you that quick go-to spot for putting on shoes, but also can be a place where you can place your extra blankets or bed pillows when you’re not using them at night. I love the idea of cozying up on a chaise next to a fireplace, and what better place to do it than in the comfort of your own bedroom! Doesn’t this look so comfortable? This would be an excellent place to curl up and read a book, especially with the complimenting side table and floor lamp! One of my favorite pieces to incorporate into a bedroom would have to be a traditional club chair and ottoman. There is something about a comfy club chair that draws me to sit down and relax! An ottoman is also essential for kicking your feet up or placing a drink down. This bedroom has a fantastic set-up with two club chairs and one ottoman. It is the perfect amount of space for you and your significant other! I hope these bedroom seating arrangements have shown you what is important in a bedroom design. Whether you spend a ton of time in your bedroom or not, at least one piece of seating is essential for day-to-day activities. Treat yourself to that small luxury of comfort in your own bedroom! Adding Comfort & Color to an Interior Design with Area Rugs!

Posted by Catherine Cleare on Aug 28, 2014 in Accessories, Color, floors, General, rugs, trend setting design | Comments Off on Adding Comfort & Color to an Interior Design with Area Rugs!

Every cozy living space needs a great area rug. Whether it be for a pop of color, comfort, or to keep your toes warm on cooler days, there is a rug out there that is just right for you! I have recently been inspired by some amazing area rugs, and it is truly unbelievable how stunning some of these pieces can be. Here are just a few of some beautiful rugs that have helped to complete some great interior designs! This month’s issue of Architectural Digest featured Tommy Hilfiger’s one-of-a-kind Miami Home. I was inspired by the amazing Mongolian lamb area rug in his Master Bedroom. Does it get any cozier than that? The texture of the area rug compliments the white-on-white scheme highlighting the luxurious feel of the rug. I would love to have a rug like that to set my feet on first thing in the morning! What first comes to mind when I think of this room is peace and serenity. All of the colors within this interior design tie together in harmony, including the stunning area rug! I love how this area rug by Doris Leslie Blau looks like a watercolor painting. It automatically ties together the lavender sofa and blue throw pillows as well as the blues and purples in the painting above it. Another way to make an area rug stand out in a room is by using contrasting colors such as this custom rug by The Rug Company. What is so fabulous about this area rug is that it has so much movement in it, it almost makes it look as though the room is spinning with excitement! Though there are many contrasting items in this room, they all seem to work off of each other to complete this interior design. This rug is not only beautiful and colorful, it is extremely soft and luxurious as well. This modern rug is made from New Zealand wool, silk and viscose, and is sure to draw your guests’ eyes to the floor! The rug creates an impeccable balance in this space, by evening out the blue tones on either side of the room. You are really getting the best of both worlds with this rug – style and comfort! As you can see, the possibilities for area rugs are endless! These are only just a few of the fabulous finds I have found over time. After seeing these, I hope you think big on your next area rug purchase. The sky is the limit as far as comfort and design are concerned! Coastal Elements for an Endless Summer!

Posted by Catherine Cleare on Aug 13, 2014 in Accessories, Bedrooms, ceilings, chairs, chandeliers, Color, design philosophy, floors, furniture, General, kicthens, Kitchens, Lighting, linens, rugs, Seating, tables, Textiles, trend setting design | Comments Off on Coastal Elements for an Endless Summer!

This is the time of year to be inspired by all things coastal and nautical! These trends seem to have been transformed throughout the years to a style that is both classy and elegant, and can ultimately be used in any home. Here are some great ideas of how to introduce a “beachy” vibe into your interior designs This is a perfect example of how you can add coastal elements to a Kitchen. This Kitchen is beautiful on its own, but is brought to life with a sea glass chandelier and blue accents! I especially love the cerused oak farmhouse table mixed with the rattan dining chairs. It truly gleams nautical in a charming way! The best part about this interior design, is that these accessories can easily be replaced when you are ready for a new look! Blues are very commonly tied to coastal and nautical interior designs. This is because of several different factors including the relation to the ocean, and the serene mood this color can set in a space. I love the nautical element it brings into this Mid-Century Modern Living Room. The different hues of blue throughout the room tie in between the seating, rug, and wall color. The mixes of wood are also a great addition. The coffee table especially reminds me of a boat! While on the subject of boats, there are several features that we can incorporate into interior designs to be reminiscent of boats or the nautical style. Some from this Living Room in particular are the dark woods, nautical stripes, and rounded edges of a boat’s sides. Though some of these factors can look a bit literal, they do not always have to be that way. Introducing maybe one or two of these looks can be a subtle enough hint at a nautical approach. One of the first things that comes to mind in a coastal bedroom is high ceilings. This allows you to open up your doors in the morning to and have the ocean air circulate throughout your entire space! This bedroom has just that, with stunning wood accents throughout the ceiling and the rest of the design. What I love most about this interior design is that it has a cozy club chair and ottoman; an essential item for any bedroom where you can lay back and read one of your favorite books! As you can see, coastal and nautical interior designs do not need to be literal! They can be incorporated along with classic elements to create a timeless space where you can escape from day to day troubles. I hope this has inspired you to incorporate coastal and nautical pieces into your interior designs. If you would like further inspiration, please feel free to view my interior design work here. Integrating Stainless Steel Accents Into Your Interior Design

Posted by Catherine Cleare on Jul 31, 2014 in Accessories, bathrooms, Color, countertops, furniture, General, kicthens, Kitchens, Lighting, Seating, tables | Comments Off on Integrating Stainless Steel Accents Into Your Interior Design

Whether you are looking to design a modern home, or a transitional home, there is always room to add in stainless steel accents to your design! Stainless steel can be used in all sorts of ways throughout a design, and it may be that one last piece you need to add a little bit of sheen to your room. Here are some great examples of how  to incorporate stainless steel accents into your interiors design! This wood dominant Kitchen is completed by the stainless steel countertop, backsplash, and appliances bringing an overall harmony to this modern industrial Kitchen design. These accents help to lighten up the room; with under cabinet lighting accentuating these features. Stainless steel is a great element to incorporate when a space needs to look a little lighter, and this is the perfect example of this! I love the look of this custom brushed stainless steel tub with the charcoal pebble wall mosaic behind it! Stainless steel is just one of the many materials in this Master Bathroom that all combine to make a stunning design. This one of a kind piece is a focal point of this room, creating a relaxing space to wind down in at the end of the day! Another great place to include stainless steel accents is in a Game Room! Stainless steel is ideal for “Man Caves” and Game Rooms because stainless steel can contribute towards a masculine design when used properly. This billiard table is made of a stainless steel and copper frame that looks elegant combined with the copper accents in the furniture throughout the design. This is a great space for the guys to hang out! Stainless steel does not necessarily need to be incorporated as a focal point in a design, instead, it can be brought in through furniture frames, and little elements to help complete a design as a whole. This is a great example of modern Kitchen doing just that. Stainless steel is brought into the space through the dining chair frames, chaise frame, Kitchen hardware and island lighting. All of these pieces come together to work with the white Kitchen and light and dark woods! I hope this has opened your eyes into adding stainless steel accents to your home. As you can see, it creates an element of luster and sheen in a space, as well as making the room appear lighter. Introducing Accent Lighting Into Your Interior Design

Posted by Catherine Cleare on Jul 17, 2014 in General, Lighting, trend setting design | Comments Off on Introducing Accent Lighting Into Your Interior Design

Accent lighting is a powerful feature to add to a home to highlight and accentuate the beautiful features throughout each space. It is especially important for pieces or materials that you find one of kind, that you want to emphasize. Accent lighting not only highlights specific items, but also brings drama to the space, and affects the overall ambience of the room. Here are some ideas of how to incorporate accent lighting to spotlight some stunning features of a home. Accent lighting is incorporated under this cantilevered vanity in this Master Bathroom. This light feature focuses on the voided space between the vanity and the floor to add depth in an interesting way. This is a great idea for a transitional or modern space, as it contributes a sleek line of lighting that is consistent with these styles. Wall washers used in this Entryway, highlight the texture of this stone accent wall, creating stronger shadows in this room. Without these wall washers, there would be no grounds to pull visitors’ eyes to this focal point. I especially love the pendants in this Foyer, as they create unique patterns on the ceilings, drawing your eyes upwards. There are several accent lights used throughout this space to bring a sense of comfort and warmth to this Kitchen/Dining area. First, the under cabinet lighting is a very common, but fabulous feature to have in a Kitchen, because it can be used for function or to highlight a pretty backsplash. Second, the accent lighting added to the inside of the upper cabinets is lovely because it can highlight your favorite china or crystal pieces. And finally, the cove lighting above really ties it all together, making this space the perfect spot to cozy up by the fire. If you are the type of person to go for the extremely dramatic effect, then look no further than this bedroom designed by Mark English Architects, where every corner is featured with accent lighting. Though this takes a lot of detail in order to build it, it has an immense effect on the mood of this room contributing to the modern look of the space. I love this idea for a bedroom. It sets a dramatic mood for an intimate space. I hope you have been fascinated by these ideas for accent lighting. There are so many ways to incorporate this type of lighting into your interior design to accentuate the already stunning features. Accent lighting just helps to bring out the true beauty of them. If you would like further inspiration, please feel free to view my interior design work here. Amazing Glass Pieces at the 2014 ICFF!

Posted by Catherine Cleare on Jul 1, 2014 in Accessories, Art, Color, General, interior design show, mirrors, trend setting design | Comments Off on Amazing Glass Pieces at the 2014 ICFF!

This year at the 2014 International Contemporary Furniture Fair, I saw a plethora of glass exhibitors. It was amazing for me to see the new and innovative techniques used to create artistic glass pieces, such as sculptures, paneling, and lighting fixtures for your interior design. The colors that glowed in these pieces were fascinating! Here are some of the few pretty pieces seen at the ICFF.   These Green Wall Panels by Tsunami Glassworks are so unique and customizable, but my favorite part is that they are also eco-friendly! Each square piece, is made of reclaimed window glass, recycled glass shards, and reclaimed wine bottles. With added color, they are renewed to be wonderful works of art. Each sculpture is mounted on a clear sheet of glass, and they can be mounted in a cluster, or by themselves; how pretty!   This had to have been one of my favorite pieces at the show because the colors were outrageous! This piece called “Ice Rainbow 2” is made of different colored hand blown glass pieces and Swarovski crystals mounted onto a mirror. This is part of Abby’s Galaxy Mirror collection. These pieces are one of a kind, and would look fabulous in an Entryway or Bedroom to replace your basic mirror. This is a great example of an innovative piece – taking a standard functional mirror and transforming it to a work of art.   If you do not have the wall space for artwork, then maybe consider hanging pieces instead! These glass pieces, by Yorgos Papadopoulos, are inspired by the Turkish Evil Eye. These are created with pigmented resins morphing the pieces into unique shapes of color. I would love to hang these in clusters, as they look beautiful together!   What you do not see every day is a colorful glass sink like this one by Shakuff. What better way to make your own bathroom feel like a spa! Shakuff makes their sinks by layering several sheets of glass on top of one another to create a unique movement of color, as well as increased durability. What is great about these sinks, is that they are stain and scratch resistant, so there is no need to worry! I would love to use one of these sinks in a Powder Room where guests can get a glimpse of its beauty! Do you believe all of the possibilities that we have these days with glass? It is unbelievable the amount of color and saturation you can achieve in glass pieces like these for your interior design. I hope this has opened your eyes to the possibilities you have, to incorporate glass into your home. If you would like further inspiration, please feel free to view my work here.
